Pierre-Philippe Thomire (French, 1751-1843)
Empire marble mantel (fireplace) clock. 1st quarter 19th century; Rouge Griotte marble and bronze doré; depicting a leaning cupid with mounts below depicting cupid and psyche, on paw feet; the enameled dial marked for Thomire & Cie and Moinet Aine, the elder. Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) a French sculptor, was the most prominent bronzier, or producer of ornamental patinated and gilt bronze objects and furniture mounts of the First French Empire. Examples of Thomire’s work are held at the White House, Washington DC, the Louvre, France and the Royal Collection, Great Britain.
